Advancing oral health through education, research, and patient care

The Indiana University School of Dentistry has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. Over the past 145 years, we’ve become a national leader in preparing oral health professionals, conducting innovative research that has an impact on patients and the profession, and providing patient-centered care.

We’re located on the IU Indianapolis campus in downtown Indianapolis, in close proximity to the IU School of Medicine, the IU School of Nursing, the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, several major hospitals, and the Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Discover our research

Researchers at the School of Dentistry played a key role in one of the most significant public health advancements in human history: the development of the first fluoride toothpaste. Today School of Dentistry researchers are carrying on that legacy of innovation as they make strides in areas such as cariology, dental informatics, and bone and tissue engineering.

The Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) community converged on the top floor of the IU Indianapolis Campus Center for the 34th Annual Research Day on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The event showcased research from across all disciplines, bringing the IUSD community together for an afternoon of engaging, research-driven conversation. After playing a pivotal role in securing IU Indianapolis’ designation as an R1 university last year, IUSD followed that feat with a record-breaking number of posters at this year’s Research Day.

Child receives dental care from an IUSD student

More than 100 children received free dental care during IUSD’s annual Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) event on March 14, 2026. Families gained access to sustainable dental resources as children’s fear of dental tools diminished. From the fun zone and face painting to dental screenings and fluoride varnish applications, patients progressed from stress‑relieving activities to receiving dental services. Some left with new IUSD patient charts created and plans for follow‑up care. Everyone, however, left feeling more at ease with dental visits and sporting more confident smiles.
